Tara Canyon: One Day Tara Rafting Trip runs through Rafting Republic Wild River. Rated 4.8 across 138 reviews. Runs 4 hours. From $56.

Overview

This four-hour rafting trip covers 17 km of the Tara River through the stretch with the densest concentration of rapids, ending at a beach beside the operator's camp. The day starts at 10:00 at Rafting Camp Divlja Rijeka near Foča, on the Bosnian side of the border, with a welcome drink and the handing out of rafting equipment. From there a roughly 30-minute van ride takes the group to Brštanovica, the put-in point inside the canyon.

At the start the river guides give a short briefing on paddling, boat handling and how to behave in the water. Then the group sets off down one of the deepest canyons in the world, inside a UNESCO-protected area, stopping at agreed spots for photos and swimming. Some stops also let swimmers jump from natural rocks. One reviewer who joined in July described this section as fairly gentle, relaxing rather than extreme, so thrill-seekers wanting constant white water should temper expectations. The trip finishes within walking distance of showers at the camp.

Transport to the meeting point is not arranged, so travellers staying in Montenegro need to make their own way there. One Swedish group left their cars on the Montenegrin side and phoned the operator, who collected them by minivan after the border. Meals are not part of the package but can be bought at the camp restaurant.

What To Expect From The Tour

A few practical points shape the day, from what to pack to how the water actually feels.

Common issues. Pickup to the meeting point is not included, and food, drinks and accommodation are excluded. One reviewer was let down by a guide who spoke little English, leaving that boat without the stories and commentary other boats received, though most reviewers describe the guides warmly. The same reviewer flagged the lack of river photos. Another recurring note is that departures are not always punctual, and the platform's own summary mentions that more timely starts would improve the day.
