Kotor Old Town Walking Tour runs through Montenegro Adventures DMC. Rated 4.8 across 392 reviews. Runs 1 hour. From $29.
One hour is enough to walk most of Kotor's Old Town with a guide, and that is exactly what this tour does. It starts on the plateau in front of the Sea Gate, the main entrance to the Old Town, where the guide waits by the tourist information point holding a sign. From there the route moves through the Square of Arms and past the Clock Tower, the palaces of Beskuca and Pima, St. Tryphon Cathedral, the Maritime Museum, the Karampana Well and the churches of St. Luke and St. Nikola, ending back near the main gate. Admission tickets for the cathedral, the museum and the two churches are not included in the tour price.
The tour is run by Montenegro Adventures DMC and is designed as an easy city walk rather than a hike. Reviewers repeatedly describe it as informative, well paced and a good introduction to the town's history, with several noting the guide packed a lot of context into the hour. Groups can run to as many as 30 travellers, and a minimum of five bookings is needed for the tour to go ahead.
Children are welcome when accompanied by a paying adult. Comfortable shoes are advised because the streets are cobblestoned.
Here is what to know before booking, based on the listing and on what past travellers have written.
Common issues. The main uncertainty is the minimum group size: the tour can be cancelled after confirmation if fewer than five travellers book, in which case a full refund, an alternative tour or another date is offered. Church, cathedral and museum entries are extra, as are food, drinks and transport, so budget for anything you want to enter. The tour is not wheelchair accessible, though pushchairs are fine. Cruise passengers should know that a late or non-arriving ship means no refund. One reviewer found the square extremely busy during the independence celebration, which made finding the group harder, though the guide's sign at the information point helped.
On the plateau in front of the Sea Gate, the main gate of Kotor's Old Town, by the Tourist Info Point on Trg od Oružja. The guide holds a sign reading Old Town of Kotor Walking Tour. The walk finishes back at the Square of Arms, near the same gate.
No. There is no hotel pickup or drop-off and no transportation of any kind. Travellers make their own way to the main gate.
Guiding services, the Kotor city tax and a map of the Old Town. Food, drinks, gratuities and entrance fees for the Maritime Museum, the city wall, the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon and the churches of St. Luke and St. Nikola are all extra.
Children are welcome when accompanied by a paying adult, and a child rate applies when sharing with one paying adult. The tour is not wheelchair accessible, but pushchairs can be brought and reviewers who used a cane described the walk as manageable. The cobblestone streets mean sturdy shoes are a good idea.
Cancel at least 24 hours before the start time for a full refund. Inside 24 hours there is no refund and changes are not accepted. If the operator cancels for poor weather or because the minimum of five travellers is not met, you get a different date, a similar experience or a full refund.
Comfortable footwear for cobblestones and clothing suited to the weather, since the tour runs in all conditions. Service animals are allowed, and the meeting point is near public transport. Cash or a card is useful if you plan to pay your own way into the cathedral, museum or churches.
